Keeping you, our volunteers and the community safe.
Blaenavon's Heritage Railway takes the safety of our visitors, volunteers and wider community safety. We've spent a great deal of time, effort and money introducing new measures to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission.
All tickets are currently being issued on a per-compartment basis. This allows us to ensure that each family/extended household is separate from each other during the journey. Furthermore, all tickets MUST be booked in advance of your visit.
NHS WALES TEST, TRACE, PROTECT:
We are proud to support the NHS Wales's Test, Trace, Protect service to help Keep Wales Safe. All passengers will be required to provide contact information upon their arrival. This will only be used to support the Test, Trace, Protect service, should an outbreak occur on our premises. Data collected for this purpose will be deleted after 21 days. Please note that is compulsory for us to collect this information, and our volunteers thank you for your co-operation.
NHS COVID-19 APP:
We encourage all visitors to install the NHS COVID-19 app in advance of their visit. You'll find QR codes around our premises, allowing you to check in to locations as you go.
We've introduced a one-way system throughout Furnace Sidings station and aboard our carriages. Please follow the arrowed 'One Way/Un Ffordd' signs when moving through these areas, keeping at least two metres apart from others outside your group at all times.
In line with Welsh Government regulations, all passengers aged 11 or over must wear a suitable face-covering whilst in station buildings and in carriage corridors. If you are only travelling with your family/extended household bubble, then you may remove your face coverings once inside your private compartment with the door closed.
We've introduced new hand sanitiser pumps both within Furnace Sidings station building and aboard our carriages. These are checked regularly throughout the day and replenished when necessary. Please inform our volunteers if any additional top-ups are required.
We've also heightened our general cleaning regime, with key areas being cleaned regularly throughout the day. Please let our volunteers know if you spot anything that needs addressing.
All carriage door handles and other key touchpoints will be sanitised between every service.
To encourage greater air circulation, carriage windows will be left fully open for a minimum of 15 minutes between every service. We also encourage passengers to leave windows open whenever the weather permits.
We introduced perspex screens within our station building (including in the ticket office, tearoom and gift shop) to help reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission.
CARD-ONLY AND CONTACTLESS PAYMENTS:
Please be aware that we are currently only accepting card/contactless payments at the railway.
We ask that adults be seated nearest the window whenever possible, with younger children being seated towards the compartment door. This request is based on evidence that younger children are less likely to transmit COVID-19 than adults.
INTERACTING WITH SANTA:
To help reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission, we've had to limit each child's interaction with Santa this year. Santa and his helpers will speak to families/extended households from the carriage corridors, wearing a Christmassy face covering (see below) whilst doing so.
Santa will spend approximately 2 - 3 minutes speaking with each compartment, thereby limiting the amount of potential exposure to and from every group.
Unless exempt, everyone aged 11 or over must wear a face covering when interacting with Santa and his helpers through open compartment doors. Please be aware that our volunteers (including Santa) will be wearing a Christmassy face-covering whilst interacting in this manner. We encourage adults to explain to younger children that Santa is just making sure he's safe to visit them on Christmas eve.
ON TRAIN REFRESHMENTS:
Santa's elves will be passing through the train with a serving of juice for children and a mince pie and sherry/non-alcoholic alternative for adults. The precautions that they will take will be similar to those being adopted by servers in restaurants and cafes. To reduce the number of people touching contact surfaces, we request that you open and close your compartment doors from the inside when they approach.
