The British Rail Class 31 locomotives, also known as the Brush Type 2 were built by Brush Traction from 1957 to 1962. The first locomotive was completed in the final week of September 1957, the first Class 31 entered service in November 1957.
D5627 entered service on 23 June 1960 and was allocated to Ipswich Shed. It spent much of its early career operating in the East of England, with additional allocations to Stratford and Finsbury Park.
D5627 was numbered as 31203 under the TOPS scheme and operated from Bescot and Immingham on freight duties, before moving to Civil Engineer duties in the 1990s.
Placed into storage in July 2000, 31203 was purchased for preservation and was restored at the Chasewater Railway, before being moved to the Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway where the locomotive is now based.
Following another overhaul, completed in early 2024, it is now operating services at Blaenavon’s Heritage Railway. and running in its original livery as D5627

Blaenavon's Heritage Railway runs through the Blaenavon World Heritage site on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park. We operate steam and heritage diesel services on weekends and bank holidays between April and September, together with selected Wednesdays during July and August. We also offer a range of special events throughout the year, including our popular Halloween Ghost Trains and Santa's Maigical Steam Train.
